According to earlier reports, A Magnitude 3.4 earthquake struck about a mile south of McArthur in Vinton County, southeast Ohio. The epicenter was just off State Route 93. And now New reports indicate that a series of smaller quakes have been rattling Missouri along the New Madrid Seismic Zone. 6 earthquakes started rattling near Lilbourn, Missouri along the New Madrid Seismic Zone – M2.3, M0.9, M2.0, M1.6, M0.9. Ohio is on the periphery of the New
Madrid Seismic Zone, an area in Missouri and adjacent states that was the site of the largest earthquake sequence to occur in historical times in the continental United States. The New Madrid Earthquakes of 1811–12 were an intense intraplate earthquake series beginning with an initial earthquake of moment magnitude 7.5–7.9 on December 16, 1811, followed by a moment magnitude 7.4 aftershock on the same day. They remain the most powerful earthquakes to hit the contiguous United States east of the Rocky Mountains in recorded history.
Earthquake Shakes Up Residents in Bardwell, KY – 3rd Quake on New Madrid In 7 Days –These quakes are following another series of Quakes all centered around the new Madrid fault as well. The ground shook across portions of at least three states, back on may 17th, after a magnitude 3.2 quake struck directly underneath the Mississippi River just west of Bardwell. The USGS says the quake happened at 5:20 am, Tuesday. Within minutes of the ground shaking, residents of western Kentucky began logging on to the USGS website and registering they felt the quake.
